Benjamin F. Bird is a native of Decatur County, Indiana: was born July 14, 1828. His parents were William and Maria (Dent) Bird, natives respectively, of Kentucky and Virginia; former of Scotch and the latter of German descent. They were married in Kentucky. Benjamin was reared on a farm: his education for the day was fair. At the age of twenty-two he began life on his own responsibility. October 18, 1849, his marraige with Harriet Small, daughter of John and Nancy Small, old and respected residents of Decatur County, was solemnized. Mrs. Bird was born October 12, 1832 in Decatur County, Indiana. To the union of Mr. And Mrs. Bird three children have been born: Ausberry, born October 8, 1850; John W.,January 19, 1854; Leroy F., December 13, 1857 -- all of whom are now living; the two oldest being married and living in this township. Mr. Bird is a stanch Republican. He had some aid at his start in life, and by hard work has added considerable to his fortune; he now owns two fine farms, one in Section 5 and the other in section 6, in all 395 acres of the finest land in the county. He settled on the farm where he now resides in 1854, when there was but 10 acres in cultivation. He makes a specialty of raising fine hogs of the Poland-China Breed. Owned land in Deer Creek Twp in 1878
