    Benjamin Bigelow and wife Elizabeth came from Lunenburg to Monadnock No. 4 [Fitzwilliam] as early as 1762, "without doubt, the first settler". May 3d, 1771, Mr. Bigelow was drowned at Winchester, in the Ashuelot River, while attempting to cross it on the ice, as he was returning to his home on foot with provisions for his family.
