Benedict was a weaver by trade. He was married by Rev. Dr. Joseph Torrey of the Church of Christ, South Kingstown, on 5 Oct 1755, to Elizabeth "Betsey" Ladd.

Benedict Oatley lived in the Oatley homestead until 29 April 1769, when he sold the house and lot, "willed to me by my father", to his brother, Samuel.
