Barbara spent her early working years in retail sales. She worked in management while raising her five children. Following the death of her first husband, she decided to make a change, attended Florida Junior College where she took a course in Practical Nursing, graduating in the top ten in her class. After passing State Boards with the highest score, Barbara went to work at St. Vincents Medical Center until an automobile accident left her unable to do the physical work the job demanded. Her last years were as an Office Manager until her marriage to Bob French. They traveled extensively and both served as Southeast Regional President of the Fleet Reserve Association (Bob) and the Ladies Auxiliary (Barbara).

In the late 1980's, Barbara started working on the Family Tree, which had been her mother's dream. In 1992, Barbara was diagnosed with PBC, Primary Biliary Cirohsis. This chronic disease is of unknown origin with no known treatment. Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL., immediately accepted her in the 2nd phase of a research program that would run 5 years to determine if the medication used might at least slow down the progression of the disease. The only other alternative was a liver transplant.

In September 1997, the doctors diagnosed a tumor, located on her kidney, as malignant. She was removed from the liver transplant list as no longer eligible. Barbara spent her remaining time continuing to work on the Family Tree and making sure her family was prepared for her death. She continued to take care of us, in her special way, until the day she died.
