AVIS LUCILLE (LEACH) CONARY CUSHING BUCKSPORT - Avis L.(Leach) Conary Cushing, 83, died Feb. 5, 2001, at a Penobscot Nursing Home. She was born Dec. 28, 1917, in Penobscot, the daughter of Pearl and Leila (Wardwell) Leach. Avis and her husband Harold, owned and operated the Dairy Bar in Bucksport for more than 20 years. She was a lifetime member of the local TOPS group, enjoyed reading, spending time with her family and at her home. She is survived by many nieces and nephews including Tracy Eldridge Jr., Anna Lee Eldridge, Donald Eldridge II and wife, Wanda; and their three sons, Joanne Pierce, Leila Burgess, Carol Gilbert, and Sheila Nevells; sister-in-law, Connie and husband, Harvard Collins; and special friends Lorna and Larry Wahl. Avis was predeceased by her eight brothers, Earl, Brandon, Jack, Walter, Kenneth, Harland, Clyde, and Carl; her seven sisters, Olive Leach, Myrtle Inman, Marjorie Pettee, Gladys Eldridge, Adelene Marks, Murrill Leach, and Elva Field. She was also predeceased by her first husband Frank Conary in 1960, and her second husband Harold Cushing in 1997. Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 Wednesday at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home 14 Elm St. Bucksport, where a funeral service will take place 1 p.m. Thursday with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Spring interment will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, donations in Avis's memory can be made to the Penobscot Nursing Home, care of Betty Abbott, Penobscot, ME 04476, for the specific use of purchasing wheelchair accessible swings. -Bangor Daily News 06 February 2001
