Avis married her cousin Wilbur Dee Steward, son of David and Bertha (King) Steward, on the 17th of October 1943 in Santa Ana, California, USA. Avis' father, Samuel, was the elder brother of Bertha. Wilbur and Avis divorced in July 1973 within Los Angeles County, California, USA. However, they supposedly remarried in California sometime after this date.

Avis received ordination as a Pentecostal minister in the 1970's. She has other relatives whom also received ordination, including her elder sister Hazel; "Annabell."
