Augustus Hull died May 13th, 1865, of chronic diarrhea, in the 23d year of his age. He embraced religion when but a child, and united with the Seventh-day Baptist Church of Rock River, (Milton,) Rock Co., Wisconsin, of which he was a much esteemed member until his death. From the first of the outbreak of the slaveholders' rebellion, he felt it his duty to share in the perils of his fellow countrymen in the defense of the government that had spread its wings over and fostered him, and was only restrained by his friends, in view of his already shattered constitution. When, however, the last call for men was made, he could no longer resist the conviction of duty, and having recently removed to Minnesota, he enlisted in the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery, Co. H, and was taken to Chattanooga, where his health sank under the weight of disease. His Captain wrote to his wife, 'Your brave and patriotic husband died like a soldier and a Christian, singing and praising God.' A few days after, his Orderly Sergeant wrote to her, and said, 'Your husband died with a smile on his face; he was beloved by all who knew him.' Thus another victim has been slaughtered upon the altar of his country. V. H.
