August Jacob Wise was the son of August D. Wise and Theresia Terling Wise. He was born June 19, 1874 in Ft. Loramie, Shelby County, Ohio. He was baptised Augustinium Jacoben Wise on June 21, 1874 in St. Michael's Church, Ft. Loramie, Ohio. His sponsors were Jacob Gaier and Maria Pleiman.

He was the operator and owner of the Wise Sawmill in Ft. Loramie most of his life. In Memoirs Of The Miami Valley, Chicago: R.O. Law Co., 1919-1920, 1950 pgs. - p. 419, it mentions the Wise sawmill and its importance to the region. "Fort Loramie is as prosperous as it ever was, perhaps more so. Manufacturers here have been confined to brick and tile making and a saw mill operated by August Wise, both at the outer edge of the town; while Fort Loramie Milling company and the Sherman Grain company handle the products of the district."

On April 24, 1897 August Wise had a horse killed by lightning. He was in his buggy a mile north of Wyant (Newport) on the pike when overtaken by a shower. He was about to drive into Barger's barn when the horse was killed. Wise was not injured although terribly frightened.

August Wise was a charter member of the St. Michael's Commandary No. 300 of the Knights of St. John. In May 1946, the Commandary had planned to celebrate its golden jubilee by inviting the remaining living charter members, August Wise, Frank Willman and Adolph Raterman, to a weekend celebration including a dinner on Saturday and a parade on Sunday. However, August was not able to attend. He had suffered a stroke on April 24 and was to remain bedfast until his death on August 18, 1946.
