[Note: presumed to be a shortening of Asaph, since Asaph is common in this family. Father Benjamin had a brother Asaph who died young, and also another of Benjamin's sons, Jonathan, named a son Asaph. Asaph seems to be used in many of the records from later in his life (e.g. see marriages in Haverhill VRs, Vol. 2, p. 188; 1850 census line 32; obituary scanned on Find A Grave memorial page).]
