KINNEY [Kenney, CR], Asa, s. Daniel and Elisabeth, [born] Oct. 14, 1743.

  2. The identification of the Asa who married Abigail Putnam is based on the following analysis, which assumes this is a first marriage - which it may not be - no information post-marriage has been yet located. (Note that the refutation of the Kinne book below is not based on this assumption, however.):

The first Asa analyzed was the one born in Middleton 1738, s/o Isaac, since the marriage occurred in Middleton. But the age at death for an Asa who died in Middleton in 1803 closely matches this Asa, so likely he never left Middleton. So, it appears unlikely he was the Asa Kinney living in Warwick in 1765 when the marriage to Abigail Putnam occurred. Further, the probate in 1803 showed he left a widow Mary (and no children). The son of Isaac, b. 1738, would be the right age to marry 1761 Mary Porter, and there is no death record or other indication that she isn't the same Mary who was the widow in the 1803 probate. He is mentioned in Source:Robertson, Florance Alice Loveless Keeney. Genealogy of Henry and Ann Kinne : Pioneers of Salem, Massachusetts, but no details beyond his birthdate are given there, indicating he was not thoroughly investigated.

Two Asa's are found born in Sutton of the right age.

Therefore, the probate of an Asa Kenney in Sutton in 1806 was investigated. His estate was administered by son John Kenney, and the small remaining balance of the estate was given to "the widow". John Kenney was born to Asa and Mehetabel Kenney in 1763, so this is apparently the man who married 1762 Mehitable Stockwell (she died in Sutton 1831, age 95.) Based on age, a marriage in 1762 is highly unlikely to be the younger of the two Asa's, so this probate appears to belong to Asa, s/o Theophilus, b. 1738, the only Asa of legal age at the time of the marriage. Additionally, the use of Jesse as a son's name, by both Theophilus and later by Asa and Mehitable, seems to confirm this identification. He is mentioned in Source:Robertson, Florance Alice Loveless Keeney. Genealogy of Henry and Ann Kinne : Pioneers of Salem, Massachusetts, but no details beyond his birthdate are given there, again indicating that he was not thoroughly investigated.

The last Asa investigated is s/o Daniel Kenney and Elizabeth Stockwell, born in Sutton, in 1743. He would be too young to marry in 1762, and even less likely to be the man who married Mehitable Stockwell who was 7 years older than he was (based on her age at death). His father Daniel died in 1753, and in 1760, Asa, described as age 16, chose Samuel Trask of Sutton as his guardian (Worcester Probate 34775). His sister Elizabeth m. David Gale, and by 1764 was living in Warwick, so there is a possible explanation for his intention to marry being registered in Warwick when he married in 1765. He by age and by process of elimination is thought to the the man who married 1765 Abigail Putnam.

Now, Source:Robertson, Florance Alice Loveless Keeney. Genealogy of Henry and Ann Kinne : Pioneers of Salem, Massachusetts, p. 139, 144, lists this Asa, s/o Daniel, as the one who married Mehitable Stockwell in 1762, despite that fact that he would be 3 months shy of 19 at the time of the marriage. Besides the clue offered by the use of the name Jesse, noted above, it may be significant to note that Asa and Mehitable also did not name any child either Daniel or Elizabeth.

Regarding the Kinne Genealogy: This source also says Asa died in 1834, but no death record or probate is found near this date, and such a date conflicts with Mehitable's death in 1831 where she is explicitly called a widow of Asa. Mehitable is shown as born in 1764, two years after the marriage! Combined with the lack of coverage of the other two Asa's, this sloppiness suggests this coverage isn't very credible.

For the various reasons given above, the Kinne Genealogy is thought to be incorrect. This incorrect identification is also found in Source:Kennedy, Mabel Stockwell. Stockwell Genealogy, which cites the Kinne Genealogy as its source, and Source:Benedict, William Addison. History of the Town of Sutton, Massachusetts, from 1704 to 1876, which being older, was probably copied by the Kinne Genealogy. None of the sources give any actual evidence to support this arrangement.
