Arthur Henry Pain was born on 8th January 1863 at Lambeth in the southern suburbs of London, son of Eleanor Sarah Sayer and Thomas Pain, a carpenter and cabinet maker. Arthur’s parents were not married at the time of his birth, although they had been presenting themselves as husband and wife for several years and he had a number of older siblings. Arthur’s parents eventually married in 1880.
The 1871 census finds Arthur living with his parents and siblings at 25 Charles Street in Southwark. By 1881 the family had moved to 58 Oakley Street in Lambeth and Arthur was working as a stoker.
On 11th July 1886, aged 23, Arthur married Mary Ann Emery at St Paul’s Church in Newington. They went on to have twelve children between 1887 and 1904, although at least three died young. The 1891 census finds Arthur, Mary and the children living at 13 Norfolk Row in Lambeth, with Arthur working as a glass blower. In 1901 they were living at 196 Quinn Square in Southwark.
Mary died in March 1908, aged 44. She died in the West Ham area to the east of London, although her burial record gives her last abode as being 206 Quinn Square in Southwark.
Nine months after Mary’s death, Arthur married again. His second wife was a widow called Mary Ann Pyman, formerly Meakins, and they married on 15th December 1908 at Christ Church in Southwark.
At the time of the 1911 census, Arthur was living with his sister Eleanor and her family at 5 Willington Road in the Stockwell area of Lambeth. He was working as a lithographer at a printing works at the time. His wife Mary was not in the same household on census night; she was living at 37 Tanswell Street with two of her children from her first marriage.
Mary died in 1912, aged 49. Arthur survived her by about 31 years.
At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 he was an inmate of the Public Assistance Institution at 182 Westmoreland Road in Southwark (the building had previously been Newington Workhouse).
Arthur died in 1943 in Battersea, aged 80.
