Bio: Anton P. "Tony" Arvay, 75, of Hammond passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 1998 at Community Hospital after a six-month battle with cancer. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Monica (nee Babinec); one son, Timothy (Susan) of Schererville; two daughters, Cynthia (Michael) Pepelea of Highland and Gloria (Mark) Zimmerman of Valparaiso; nine grandchildren, Timothy, Justin Anton, Ethan and Kennan Arvay; Matthew, Michael and Marisa Pepelea; David and Jonathan Zimmerman; in-laws, John and Helen Babinec of Carmel and Ann and Jim Miskovich of Munster; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by parents, Peter and Krestina Arvay.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 16, 1998 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 7132 Arizona Avenue, Hammond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Andrew Corona officiating. Interment, St. John Cemetery in Hammond. Friends may visit with the family Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Oleska-Pastrick Funeral Home, 3934 Elm Street (one block north of Columbus Drive - US 12), East Chicago. The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Holy Name Society will offer prayers at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m.; the American Legion will post colors at 4:30 p.m. and Father Corona will conduct a vigil service at 6 p.m. Visitation at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
Mr. Arvay was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Hammond and the Holy Name Society. He was a retiree of Inland Steel Company and Amoco Oil Company as well as a member of the Inland Steel 25 Year Club; Inland Steel Management Association; Amoco Annuitants; American Legion Allied Post #369; Slovak Catholic Sokol and Amocares Volunteer Group. He served in the U. S. Marine Corp. from 1943 to 1946. He was a skilled carpenter who also enjoyed bowling with his teammates at Olympia Lanes and watching his grandchildren's soccer, baseball and basketball games. But most of all, he was totally devoted to his wife and he was the consummate role-model for his children and grandchildren.
