American author of children's fiction who wrote the popular "Little Colonel" series, which was the basis for the 1935 film, The Little Colonel, starring Shirley Temple, Lionel Barrymore, Hattie McDaniel and Bill Robinson. Her husband William Johnston, who was also her mother's cousin, died after just four years of marriage leaving her alone to raise her three stepchildren, Mary, 1872-1962, Rena, 187?-1901 and John, 1881-1910. Rena died of appendicitis and John of tuberculosis.
