Ann Simpson was baptised on 1st June 1793 at Downham Market in Norfolk, daughter of Robert and Mary Simpson.

Ann's next sighting is 32 years later, on 23rd August 1825, when she married a blacksmith called Matthew Cox at Barnack in Northamptonshire, some 39 miles west of Downham Market. Matthew was a widower, with two young children from his first marriage.

Shortly after their marriage they moved about four miles west to Easton on the Hill, where they went on to have five children baptised between 1826 and 1837.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find Ann, Matthew and their children living in Easton, with Matthew working as a blacksmith.

The 1861 census finds Ann, Matthew, one of their daughters and two grandchildren living on Church Street in Easton.

Matthew died on 27th April 1862 at Easton, aged 62. He left a will, for which Ann acted as executrix. She survived him by nearly eight years. She died at Easton on 12th March 1870, aged 76.

Baptisms 1793 / Ann Daughter of Robert & Dorothy Simson June the 1st

This baptism has been linked to the Ann Simpson who married Matthew Cox on the basis that it is in the right parish and at about the time she indicated in the censuses after her marriage. Moreover, she named one of her sons Robert Simpson Cox, presumably therefore after her father.
