Ann Jones' origins have yet to be established. As an adult she gave ages for herself suggesting she was born sometime between 1818 and 1827, whilst she also gave many contradictory places of birth, claiming to have been born in Dublin, Southampton, Amport in Hampshire and the town of Queenstown in County Cork - although Queenstown was called Cove prior to 1849 (and since 1920 has been called Cobh). As she gave Queenstown as her place of birth on two occasions, and all the other places only once, that would appear to be her most likely place of birth, but further evidence needed. The variety of places given may indicate that she had moved around extensively as a child. Ann also gave her father's name as John Jones.

Ann's first confirmed sighting is on 11th May 1846, when she married Edward Hall at St Mary's Church in Southampton. They do not appear to have had any children. The 1851 census finds them living at 2 Craven Street in the Kingsland Place area of Southampton, to the north-east of the town centre. Edward was described as a labourer.

Edward died in December 1854. His death and burial record contradict each other on his age, with his death certificate saying he was forty, but his burial record saying he was thirty.

Just over two years later, on 4th January 1857, Ann married Walter Savage, again at St Mary's Church in Southampton. He was a widower with three surviving children from his first marriage. He worked as a saddler, harness maker and last maker (lasts being the wooden blocks around which shoes and boots are made). They do not appear to have had any children together either.

Sometime between 1857 and 1861 Ann and Walter moved a few miles along the coast to Portsmouth, where the 1861 census finds them living on 94 Wingfield Street with Walter's youngest son.

By 1871 Ann and Walter had returned to Southampton, living at 10 Craven Street - the same street she had lived on with her first husband twenty years earlier. Ann was working as a charwoman at this time. By 1881 they had moved a couple of streets away to 8 Middle Street.

Walter died on 23rd December 1882 at Middle Street, aged 63.

The 1891 census finds Ann sharing one room in a house at with another widow at 40 Winchester Street, also in the Kingsland Place area of Southampton. Both were charwomen.

Ann died on 10th March 1897 in Southampton. She was said to be 76 years old.
