In the 1881 census Ann gives her birthplace as "Whitecliffe", Buckinghamshire. Just outside of Monks Risborough is a white cross cut into the side of a hill. (The soil in these parts contains a lot of chalk.) Whitecross could have been mis-heard by the enumerator as Whitecliff.

The hamlet at the bottom of the hill with the white cross on it is Cadsden where Ann is living with her husband George in 1851. Hampden Bottom Farm, where they were living in 1861, still exists. It is about 2-3 miles away on the road to Great Missenden.
