Ann Godfrey's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 13th November 1746 when she married John Bonser, a weaver, at Granby in Nottinghamshire.

Ann and John went on to have five children baptised at Granby between 1748 and 1757. All five appear to have lived to adulthood.

John died in 1784, aged 61. His will directed that Ann should live with and be looked after their son John, or that if she chose not to live with him and did not remarry then young John was to pay her an allowance of five pounds per year.

Ann survived John by nearly fifteen years. She was buried at Granby on 5th February 1799.
