Ann Aldridge was baptised on 30th January 1812 at Graveley in Hertfordshire, daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Aldridge.
On 3rd November 1832, aged 20, Ann married Thomas Pratt, an agricultural labourer from the neighbouring parish of Willian. They married at Graveley and lived there for the first few years after their marriage, having five children baptised there between 1832 and 1843. Their first child was baptised the day after their marriage, making it likely that he was actually born before their marriage.
The 1841 census finds Ann, Thomas, their children and some of Ann's siblings living in Graveley.
Some time between 1843 and 1846 the family moved to Willian, having another four children baptised there between 1846 and 1857. The 1851 census describes Ann as a 'plaiting maker', presumably working in the local straw plait industry.
Thomas died in 1877, aged 66. He was buried at Willian on 22nd March 1877.
By 1881, Ann had left Willian and returned to Graveley, where she was working as a midwife to the family of the miller at the mill on Jacks Hill.
The 1891 census finds Ann living with her son James and his family in the nearby town of Stevenage. Towards the end of her life Ann spent some time in the Three Counties Asylum at Stotfold in Bedfordshire. She died there in 1899, aged 87. She was buried back at Willian on 14th December 1899.
