Angus McCurry, Sr. was born in Scotland and came to America with an expedition on the Flora McDonald ships from one of the Isle's of Uist in the Outer Hebrides Islands off the northwest coast of Scotland in 1774. He settled on the shores of North Carolina. He later moved to Elbert County, Georgia, where he was one of the first settlers in northern Georgia on the Savannah River. Served as a private In the North Carolina Militia in the Revolutionary War and received land grants for that service. They were: 65 acres and 277 acres on Powderbag Creek, 276 acres on Lightwoodlog Creek, 300 acres on Cedar Creek and 490 acres in the First District of Wayne County. The John Benson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a marker on November 13, 1932 to the memory of Angus McCurry in the Mount Zion Methodist Church Cemetary in Hart County, Georgia. Because of Lake Hartwell, this church and cemetery were inundated and the grave of Angus McCurry was moved to New Harmony Methodist Church cemetery, between Hartwell and Reed Creek by the Corps of Engineers [SOURCE: The Hart of Georgia: A History of Hart County Georgia, p. 498.].

Buried: New Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery. "Take Hwy. 51 north to Mount Hebron Church Road (CR 291). Cemetery Is behind church on left side of the road." Angus McCurry Will 1841. In the name of God Amen. I Angus McCurry of the state of Georgia and of Elbert County being weak in body, but of sound mind and memory reflecting that death is the lot of all men and believing in the Christian religion & in a general Resurection. I commend my Soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried in Christian decency at the discretion of my executors. An of the worldly substance of which I am possessed I make the following distribution viz: First. I will and direct that all my just debts & funeral expenses be first paid. Secondly. To my beloved daughter Mary Martin I will and bequeath Three Hundred & ninety three dollars & fifty cents. Thirdly. To my beloved daughter Margarett Johnson I will & bequeath Three dollars & fifty cents. Fourthly. To the heirs of my beloved daughter Katharine Johnson Three dollars & fifty cents. Fifthly. To my beloved daughter Flora Haynes I will & bequeath Three dollars & fifty cents. Sixthly. To Lauchlin my son I will & bequeath Sixty three dollars & fifty cents. Seventhly. To my son Neal M. McCurry I will & bequeath Three Hundred & ten dollars and fifty cents. Eighthly. To my son Angus I will & bequeath Three Hundred & Seventy Three dollars & fifty cents. Ninthly. I will & bequeath to my children, James Alexander, Frances Daniel, and Elizabeth Three Hundred & Ninety three dollars & fifty cents. Tenthly. I will & direct that all my property real & personal be sold on a credit of twelve months & out of the proceeds thereof the several legacies before mentioned be paid & the balance be equally divided among my children. viz. Mary, John, Margarett, the heirs of my daughter Katharine, Flora, Lauchlin, Neal, Angus, James, Alexander, Frances, Daniel, Elizabeth. Eleventh. I appoint & ordain my sons John McCurry & Lauchlin B. McCurry my true & lawful Executors to this my last will & Testament, revoking & entirely disannulling all former will by me made heretofore. In witness & in Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affirmed my seal this fifteenth day of June in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred & Forty one. Elbert County Personally came into open Court Jesse White. who being sworn saith that he was present and heard Angus McCurry acknowledge the within instrument of writing as his last will and Testament and that this deponent together with Alexander McCurry and Reuben L. Tyler Signed the same as witnesses to the same in the presence of the testator and at his request and in the presence of each other and that this deponent believes the Testator was of Sound mind at the time he executed the same.
