I have a long story about witch doctoring and my grandmother Parton whose father was well know in how to deflect spells (if I'm not mistaken he was almost all Cherokee--can't remember his first name, but his surname was Maiden). Once when mother was a teenager, grandma Parton's cow had something wrong with its milk and she knew enough to know it was a spell but she didn't know how for sure to get it removed so she went to her father who confirmed that indeed someone had put a spell on her cow. He told her she should take some of the milk, put it in a pan and when it began to simmer, to take a particular switch (I can't remember from what kind of tree) and switch the milk. He said whoever put the spell on her cow would send someone to borrow something--a needle, thread, cup of sugar or whatever--and that she must not lend anything or the curse would not be removed. Very shortly afterwards, a little Gibson (I'm making up the name) boy knocked on the door and told grandma Parton that his grandma Gibson had knocked a pot of boiling water off the stove and had burned her back real bad and had sent him to see if grandma Parton would send her some salve. Mother said that grandma, who always loved kids and was always kind talking to them, shook her finger at him and told him to go back and tell his grandma that that wasn't the half of what she was going to do to her if she didn't take that spell off her cow. The next day the cow was just fine.

- "Grandma Parton used to mix sulpher and sugar in a bowl and set it on a little table by the door and we were supposed to take a spoonful each time we left the house. I'm not sure I remember what it was for but I do remember that I developed quite a taste for it. " -Fred Wing, 2/18/2009
