History of Chautauqua County, New York, 1875. by Andrew Young. Andrus M. HUYCK Settled early, on lot 16 bought in 1826, Arkwright, in the spring of 1827, he built a log house into which he moved his family, consisting of a wife, and 2 sons, Shadrach and Oscar. There was no other early settler near him, but so rapidly did new settlers come in that they put up a small log school house in season for a school the next winter, and in a few years a frame school house was erected. The school prospered and took the name of 'The Abbey School'. It became quite a popular institution, having furnished many good and successful teachers. Mr. Huyck was himself a successful teacher, and exerted considerable influence in the cause of education, as well as in the community and in the church. Mr. Huyck has 4 sons, Shdrach, Oscar H, Elijah, and Avery and 2 daughters, Tamar and Hester, all of whom have families, 3 living in the Abbey district, and 3 in the West. Oscar H. is a justice, Avery, the youngest son now living with his father, was for 3 years in the Union Army, and in several battles, without personal injury. This family is also known as HOUCK. Andrus, was married to Nancy ALLEN. Shadrach born ca. 1824, Jefferson County, New York. Oscar H. born 1827, Chautauqua County, New York. Elijah, March 1830.

Andrus M. Huyck settled in the Abbey in 1827 in a primitive forest. Settlers came so rapidly that before long a log schoolhouse was built. It had one room, one door, one window, and was heated by a fireplace. No record of the teacher(s) or pupils are found. This school became one of high repute, and as the Abbey School, enjoyed prosperity and furnished many well-equipped teachers for public schools. Mr. Huyck was a successful teacher, school commissioner and school inspector for many years. He was a deeply religious man and did much good for the community.

Compiled and published by Ruth Griswold, 1979.
