"Fam. 2. Amos (Williams),2 (Matthew,1), b. 1646; … he is rec. on tax list, W. T. V. p. 12; was town crier, 1668; for ld. est. see Chapt. VII, Vol. I, and was one of the earliest settlers of the Rocky-Hill section of Old Weth. With his bros. Samuel and Matthew (?) he was one of the second Branford emigration to Essex Co., N. J. Exactly when the Williams bros. severed their connection with Weth. cannot be exactly determined; some make it 1685, while Wick's Hist, of the Oranges, makes Matthew's admission as a planter at Newark to have been in 1680. He also says that Amos remained in Conn. tho' he owned ppy. at North Corner (Orange) N. J., and that it was his son Samuel who came as a settler and took up ld. at First Mountain. There certainly is no rec. of Amos at Weth., after the appraisement and div. of his father's est., 1680. The destruction of Court and Church records during the Revol. war leave much to be desired.
Acc. to the Invent, of his est. filed in 1683, in Htfd. Co. Prob., he d. 20 Aug., 1683. The invent, of his (Weth.) ppy. amt. to £217-15, taken by Samuel Talcott and James Treat—ment. his ch., viz.: Samuel, ae. 8 y.; Elizabeth, ae. 6; Susannah, ae. 3 yrs.; and Jan. 3, 1697, Lieut. Thos. Hollister moved the Ct. to app. some suitable person to make dist. of est. of Amos Williams 'he, the sd. Hollister having m. the relict of the sd. Williams."
