Alvin's Parents move to Callaway County, MO

Alvin Edgar Holmes was the tenth child of a family of eleven. His parents, Elizabeth Bybee and William Holmes had married in Green County, Kentucky in 1847. The family had their first child, Adolphis Allen Holmes and had moved to Crawford County, Missouri by the time of the 1850 US Census. Their first four children were born in Crawford County before the family moved on to Callaway County, Missouri where the fifth child, Virginia was born. The family remained in Callaway County the remainder of their live and all are buried there in Guthrie and Fulton[1]. Alvin was born November 10, 1865 in Callaway County, Missouri.

Alvin's First Marriage

Image:Alvin&MattieSweetenHolmesWR.jpg

Alvin Edgar Holmes first married Mattia Jane "Mattie" Sweeten[2][3], daughter of Sarilda Jane Price and Augustus Toplady Sweeten, in Callaway Co. on October 10, 1893. The marriage date does not agree with the reported age of their daughter, Serilda, as reported on the 1900 US Census however. Perhaps should be October 18, 1883, as earlier reported by another researcher, but with undocumented source. Another photo of the couple and two of Alvin's brothers and their wives is also included on this page.

Alvin and Mattie had perhaps two daughters. Serilda Holmes was born in August 1885 per the 1900 US Census. By the time of the 1900 censusImage:I9 in June, Alvin and Sarilda are living alone, indicating that Mattie had died. Another reported daughter was Elizabeth Holmes who died in 1895. The report of two daughters is supported by the fact that they have the names of their two grandmothers, Serilda Price Sweeten and Elizabeth Bybee Holmes.

Alvin's Second Marriage

Alvin Edgar Holmes married Nettie Belle Thomason, daughter of Elizabeth Lee Vaughn and James Brown Thomason on August 11, 1904. Alvin and Nettie lived in Guthrie, Callaway, Missouri, United States and had two children, Floyd Walace and Harry William Holmes

Alvin Edgar Holmes was buried on June 9, 1945 in Guthrie Cemetery, Callaway County, Missouri. His cemetery marker is shown on the Find-A-Grave website.
