- ...Alpheus Dodge of Bath has been in town this week building a chimney in the new Knights of Pythias block...
Bath Independent, 5 Jan 1884, p. 2:
Alpheus Dodge served on the jury during the Superior Court trial of Daniel Wilkinson for the murder of Bath (Maine) police officer 'Billy' Lawrence. William 'Billy' Lawrence is the only police officer to be killed in the line of duty in Bath, and the location of his shooting is memorialized by a plaque on Broad Street in downtown Bath.
Daniel Wilkinson became the last person executed in Maine after his conviction on 7 Jan 1884. The judge determined the sentence would be death by hanging. The poorly-executed hanging was pivotal in convincing Maine to abolish the death penalty, which it did in 1887. See Wikipedia:Daniel Wilkinson (murderer) for more information on this case. A more in-depth story can be found at the City of Bath website.
Politics
Alpheus Dodge, residence 4 City Hall Court, was a candidate for common councilman from Ward Four for the Prohibition Party in 1904. However, the Prohibition Party was not popular in Bath that year; the Republican ticket won in a clean sweep and Alpheus received only six votes.S7
Alpheus was also a Prohibition Party candidate in 1903.
