In Alfred, N. Y., Feb. 19th, 1873, of scrofula, Dea. Alfred Lewis, aged 56 years and 19 days. Bro. Lewis' health had been failing for some years, but for the last few weeks his decline was rapid, so that his death, although looked for at no distant day came quite unexpectedly. He was born in Hopkinton, R. I., but in early manhood settled in Alfred, where he remained, with the exception of two or three years, until the time of his death. He was a highly esteemed citizen on account of his intelligence, industry, geniality and probity, and was honored with the highest office within the gift of his fellow townsmen, the duties of which he performed creditably to himself and to the satisfaction of his constituents.

Early in life, he made a profession of religion, and united with the First Seventh-day Baptist Church of Hopkinton, but on settling in Alfred, united with the First Church, of which he remained a beloved member until his death . In September, 1850, he was chosen to the office of deacon, and was ordained in the month of December following.

His life was one of great evenness and serenity, and his death was correspondingly peaceful. His funeral was largely attended on Sabbath, Feb. 22d, the pastor conducting the services, supported by Elders J. Allen and T. R. Williams.
