Facts and Events
[edit] About Alfred "Al" FaybushAlfred "Al" Faybush was born Alfred Faibuschewitz on 9 September 1916 in Göttingen, Hannover, Germany, the son of Jakob Faibuschewitz (1883-1960) and his wife Selma Simon. Alfred's father, Jakob (Jacob) was a Jewish immigrant born in Warsaw, Poland, and his mother Selma was born in Germany. Alfred's father Jakob worked as an orthpedic shoe repair man, but Al chose to be a baker, entering trade school at age 13 and working in a bakery at the same time. After four years of apprenticeship, he became a "journeyman" or full-fledged baker - specialzing in fancy baking (coffee cakes and rolls), when only 16 years old. Al and his family grew up in Germany under extremely difficult circumstances as the Nazi regime under Adolf Hitler targeted Jewish families for persecution and violence. Al remembered the Hitler era as a frightening experience - years of saluting the Nazis, of being watched and occasionally beaten. he was the only Jewish tradesman in his town to survive. His two sisters were not so fortunate. His sister Erna is believed to have been murdered in a German extermination camp in Poland and is other sister, Gertrude spent time in Nazi prison and slave labor camps. Luckily for him, he was able to escape and emigrate to the United States with the help of an aunt living in the U.S. who signed an affidavit that she would be responsible for him for six years. Al was able to get his father Jakob our of Germany on the last pre-war ship in 1942, but his mother Salma was deceased prior to that time. Alfred's sister Gertrude was also able to escape Nazi persecution by fleeing to Paris, France where she was to marry Henri Edouard Durand (1913-1987) in 1945 and later emigrated to America in 1952. After his arrival in America, Al became a baker in Portland, Oregon. Feeling an obligation to his new country, he enlisted in the United States Army. He took his basic training at Camp Roberts in California, where he was assigned to the Cooks & Bakers section of the Field Artillery. Because he spoke fluent German, Al was to have transferred to the O.S.S. and join the "underground" in Germany, but he was discharged after only four months because of severe sinus trouble. Al was forced to quit his job in the bakery too, because the flour dust inflamed his nostrils. In 1946, he came to Los Angeles, California, where he met his [second] wife, Eva, at a Boyle Heights Veteran's dance, and married here the same year.Al's first experience in the deli food industry would come as a clerk in a Hollywood market. Within a few months he moved to another market as manager of the liquor-deli section. He then joined Best Foods Market where he ran the deli department for the next 10 years - watching the change-over from service to self-service (as did most delis everywhere during that decade. In 1955, while Al was in the hospital having a minor operation, his store was sold. Next he clerked for Ma Gordo's Delicatessan in McDaniel's (now Hughes) Market in North Hollywood for 4½ years. After that he worked over the snack bar counter at Leo's Market, prior to his position with Big Town Market, located at the intersection of Pico & La Cienega Blvd [6151 W. Pico Blvd] in Los Angeles, California, where he became its Deli Department Manager, and was in charge of Big Town's service and self-service deli operations. Big Town Market's President in the early 1970's was Myer Kaplan (1902-1986). It was during his work with Big Town Market that Al became active in a local trade association, the Southern California Deli Council (now known as the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California (DDBC), an organization which still exists in 2014. . Al was recognized for his work in the delicatessen industry when he was awarded with the Deli Council's "Big Cheese" Award in November 1968.Al Faybush passed away on 8 August 1986 in Los Angeles County, California. [California Death Index]. His [second] wife Eva passed away in 1971 in Los Angeles County, California. They had two children, Ernest and Arlene. Al's hard-working ethic and long, illustrious career in the food industry should make his descendants proud. Image Gallery
