Charles Brownfield, the son of Robert Sr. (1730's-1821), lived near
Smithfield and had many sons, including Alexander Brownfield (the
ancestor of Mary and Winifred Woodfill) and Zadoc Brownfield, the
ancestor of many of the Brownfields that have lived in Brownfield Hollow
above Haydentown (including Ash Brownfield and his family).

I was just in the small Robert Brownfield, Sr. and Eleanor Sutton Family Cemetery in Smithfield, Fayette Co., Pa (off Main Street or Route 119) a week or so ago. It is in surprisingly good shape. Robert Jr. and Mary Bowell's stones are there and barely readable. Also, Charles Brownfield and Ruth Bowell's sons Zadoc (b.1798) and Alexander (b. 1796) and their wive's stones are still visible, as well as a number of grandchildren, etc. The place is kept mowed and there were even flags and veteran's markers on the veteran's graves.

DIED Brownfield-At his residence in Georges Tp., Fayette Co., Pa, on the 5th day of March 1863, Alex. Brownfield, Esq., in the 67th year of his age.

He was for many years a member of the M.E. Church and always generously and liberally contributed toward sustaining every interest in the church of his choice, but best of all, he died bearing a very comfortable testimony that he had "set his house in order," and that he has exchanged the sufferings of uncertainties of this life for the glorious realities an and eternal life with God in Heaven. As a husband and father, he was kind, affectionate and loving. As a friend and neighbor he was generous and accommodating almost to a fault­no one ever asked a favor of him without its being freely and cordially granted if it was in his power to do so.

Although we do not claim for our departed friend exemption from the errors and imperfections of our common nature, we do claim for him the very highest position as an honest, honorable and upright man, ever kind, affable and gentlemanly in his deportment, he endeared himself to all with whom he had intercourse. His death will be deeply lamented by all who knew him, and those who knew him best will cherish his memory most. H.S.M.
