Albert Short was baptised on 11th May 1845 at Warminghurst in Sussex, son of Jemima Short, formerly Matthews, and her husband John Short, a butcher. The family did not live in Warminghurst itself, but in the nearby parish of Washington. Albert's parents died when he was a small boy; his mother in 1850 and his father in 1851. The 1851 census, taken shortly after his father's death, finds Albert and his siblings living at Providence House in Washington. His older sister Charlotte, who was 15, was described as the head of the family, although a 36 year old Sarah Short was staying with the family described as a visitor - presumably a relative helping out with the recently orphaned children.
By 1861, Albert and his sister Sarah were living at Findon in Sussex, with their late mother's sister Matilda and her husband George Hard, a farmer. Albert was described as a pupil to farming at this time.
On 8th October 1868, aged 23, Albert married Jane Summersell at Shipley in Sussex. Albert's uncle George Hard was one of the witnesses to the marriage. Albert and Jane went on to have eleven children between 1869 and 1886. For the first few years of their marriage, they lived in Ashington, appearing there in the 1871 census at a farm called Stickers, with a general servant and agricultural labourer living with them. The built up area of Ashington village straddled the parishes of Ashington and Washington at the time, so it is entirely possible that they were living effectively in the same village in which Albert had been born. Albert was described as farming 200 acres of land in 1871, and employing four men and three boys.
Around 1875 the family left Ashington and returned to Findon where Albert had lived with his aunt and uncle a few years earlier. At Findon they ran a larger farm, being described as 400 acres in 1881, employing seven men and two boys. They also had a dairymaid and a nurse living with them in 1881.
Albert gradually took over other farms, with his obituary noting that at one time he had been farming 1,400 acres of land on three different farms in and around Findon, at Home Farm, Kingswood Farm and Rogers Farm. He was a sheep farmer, having a flock of over 1,100 breeding ewes at its peak, specialising in Southdown sheep.
Jane died in 1905, aged 60.
The 1911 census finds Albert living with his son (also Albert) and his family at Findon Farm, which was described as having ten rooms.
On 30th September 1912, Albert married again. His second wife was a widow called Jane Fraser (née Timothy), who had been living at Kingswood in Findon; one of the farms that Albert ran. They did not marry locally to Findon, but in London, in the Stockwell area of Lambeth. Albert described himself as a retired yeoman and farmer, and gave his address as 119 Stockwell Park Road in south-west London at the time of their marriage.
Albert and Jane returned to live at Kingswood in Findon. They were only married for four and a half years; Jane died at Kingswood on 4th March 1917.
Albert later retired from farming, handing over his farms at Findon to his son Albert. He left Findon and moved to the nearby town of Worthing, where he lived at 96 South Farm Road. He died on 10th January 1931 at Groombridge Nursing Home in Worthing, aged 85.

FINDON. DEATH OF MR. A. SHORT. Mr. Albert Short, formerly a farmer at Findon, died in a Worthing nursing home on Saturday, following an operation. He was 85. The funeral took place at Broadwater Cemetery yesterday. Mr. Short retired a few years ago, after having farmed at Findon since 1875. He was well known as owner of a registered flock of Southdown sheep, with which he was very successful. At one time he had on his farms over 1,100 breeding ewes. Mr. Short was a native of Ashington, and was apprenticed to his uncle, Mr. George Hard, Findon. A few years after he began to farm on a large scale, and carried on Home, Kingswood, and Rogers Farms together at one time, in addition to also farming part of Muntham, the acreage totalling about 1,400. His son, Mr. Albert Short, still farms in the village, and carries on his father's reputation.
