Albert Joseph Schultz was born in Nancy, France on March 14, 1838. His parents are unknown at present to this compiler. The 1900 US census lists him as a naturalized citizen who emigrated to the United States in 1854. This would have made him 16 years of age at that time.

Albert Joseph Schultz's real name may have been Albert LA-FEE-AIR or LA-FIL-AIR (NOTE-phonetic spelling). (Although not certain, his daughter Martha seemed more satisfied with the name, Lafierre. Note that the spelling is surmised. There is no known written record of his real name.

His daughter, Martha relates the following story about his entry into the United States. He attempted to stow away aboard a ship bound for the USA but was caught and imprisoned. He managed to escape rather quickly and to stow away again aboard the same ship. He was caught again while at sea and gave his name as Schultz, hoping to avoid prosecution for his prior arrest and escape. He was apparently given freedom of movement about the ship because, when the ship reached America, he was able to jump overboard and swim ashore.

He eventually came to Cincinnati where he worked in the tailoring trade until he joined Company F, 28th Regiment, of the Ohio Volunteers, Union Army, on August 26, 1862. He signed up for three years and went to Camp Dennison, Ohio for basic training. He is shown on muster sheets for October and November, 1862 at Camp Dennison. He fought in the Civil War with the rank of Private.

According to the history of the various battles, the 28th Regiment fought in the following encounters:

   Carnifax Ferry, W. Va. Sep 10, 1861
   Princeton, W. Va. May 15-18, 1862
Fredend City, Md. Sep 12, 1862
South Mountain, Md. Sep 14, 1862
   Antietam, Md Sep 17, 1862
Droop Mountain, Va. Nov 6, 1863
New Market, Va. May 15, 1864
   Piedmont, Va. June 5, 1864

He was wounded in the leg at the battle of New Hope near Piedmont, Virginia, on June 5, 1864. (He is listed on the casuality sheet dated June 5, 1864.) His name was entered as Alese Schultz on the casuality sheet but a correction was submitted later showing Albert Schultz. The last two muster reports show him in Company B and he was honorably discharged from Company B at Wheeling, West Virginia on July 6, 1865. He was given a pension for his wounded leg. He returned to Cincinnati and opened his own tailor shop where he worked until shortly before his death.

The name Albert Schultz appears on the 1860 US census showing the age as 22, occupation tailor, born in France so there is a high probability that this is the same man. However, it also lists Magdaline Schultz, age 21, and Mary Schultz, age 3 in the same household. Addresses and relationships were not included in the 1860 census but families were indicated by listing the last name of only the head of the household. Persons not of the family but living in the household were shown by their full names. This was not the case with Magdaline and Mary. They are indicated as family. The 1860 census was enumerated in June 23, 1860 and this entry was number 1118; page 128, the 11th ward of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Albert Schultz known to be our grandfather, was married to Elizabeth Weber at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Cincinnati on October 9, 1860. This is only four months after the census enumeration. At this time it is not known if a tragedy occurred, if there was an error by the enumerator (assuming a relationship when there was none), or if this was a different Albert Schultz.

The Clayton Library of Genealogy in Houston, TX, where much of this information was obtained had no city directories for Cincinnati after 1860. Albert Schultz appeared in none of those prior to 1860.

Albert Joseph Schultz remained married to Elizabeth Weber during the course of the Civil War. She bore him two children; Albert Joseph II and Augusta. There is no record of the death of Elizabeth Weber but he was remarried to Rose Schulz on Jan 9, 1867.

Albert II appears in the 1880 census as living with his father and step-mother, Rose. His age is shown as 13. Augusta does not appear on this census. Frank Schultz appears as age 6 and Annie Schultz appears as age 10. These ages indicate Frank and Annie as Rose's children and that Albert II was a baby at the time of our grandfather's marriage to Rose.

It has been told thar Rose died of consumption on Feb 15, 1883 and our grandfather remarried to Margaret Mary Schuster on April 14, 1883. She was 22 at this time, Albert was 45. This appears to be incorrect, as recent information acquired indicates that Rose died in 1893, and that Albert and Margaret had filed for a marriage license shortly after her death. Another (and finalized) marriage license from Hamilton County lists a marriage date of 17 Jun 1895. They appeared on the 1900 census as living at 1815 Bremen Street, Cincinnati. Her name was indicated as Maggie, wife. The children listed were Edward, 16, Charles, 14, Louis, 12, and Emil, 6.

DATA REQUIRING FURTHER INVESTIGATION

Albert Schultz was apparently well educated because he could speak, read, and write three languages fluently. French, English, and German. Martha says that he spoke with no accent.

Where did he learn the tailoring trade? We might check city records in Nancy, France for tailors named Lafierre or Lafilerre but it is possible that he learned it in Cincinnati..

Was the Albert Schultz listed in the 1860 census our grandfather? If so, what happened to Magdaline and Mary?

Were Albert and Rose divorced? This is unlikely, as Albert was Roman Catholic. A family scandal, perhaps?

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

Harry R Schultz told stories to his sons stating that Albert Schultz's real name was Albert SHIL'AIR (Note phonetic spelling) and that he took his wife's name Schultz in order to get out of France. Records in the Hamilton County Ohio Hall of Records show that he married Rosina Schulz in January 1867. However, his name was registered as Albert Joseph Schultz on the marriage license for his marriage to Elizabeth Weber, seven years before his marriage to Rosina Schulz. Any value to the above mentioned stories is most likely in entertainment only.
