She gave her sons her surname Howell as one of their Christian names. She apparently was very rich and owned many silverware

- ↑ The Howell's were originally from Welsh descent and the surname is derived from a Welsh name namely Hywel meaning the "hoe of voortreflike'. The stamvader of the Southern African Howell's is James Howell of London in England. He arrived in Southern Africa on 6 August 1806 on the ship Sceptre out of Spithead. Chief Clerk and "proviander" between 1806 and 1810 and later a general dealer.
In 1815 he started a library in Longmarket Street in Cape Town. He married Maria Magdalena Eksteen on 27 March 1808 in the Dutch Reformed Church in Cape Town. They had two children one being Michiel Marthinus Charles who married Rykie de Waal. Michiel and Rykie's descendants are Afrikaans speaking whilst the other child's descendants are mostly English speaking.
