[James Sherman Gibson.FTW] IMMIGRATION: Adam is the immigrant ancestor, first in the line to co me to America, probably in the fall of 1754. He and Nancy settled in S. Mi ddleton/ Middletown Township, Cumberland County, PA, about 1754. They bo th died there. When Adam, his wife, and his grandson, Thomas, died, the re were several legal proceedings, such as Powers of Attorney and Orphan s' Court hearings, which showed that JAMES RITCHEY was the eldest, with pr e-emption rights and that he was then living in Livingston County, KY. Jam es' oldest son, Dr. Adam Ritchey, acted as his Attorney and we nt to PA to handle legal affairs for him. Adam apparently remained in PA f rom early 1808 to 1815. Iantha Baker had an original letter written by Ad am to his father-in-law (who was also his uncle), Edward O'Hain, in York C ounty, advising him of their safe return to Livingston County, KY. Spell ed his surname RITCHEY. According to information from Iantha Baker, Adam and Agness came to Ameri ca in 1754 with their son, James, age 2, and daughter, Elizabeth, born enr oute to America on the Atlantic Ocean. The third child, John, was bo rn in Cumberland County, PA, March 14, 1756, according to his Revolutiona ry War Pension application, R8783, National Archives, the date being tak en from his parents' family bible. CHECK: "Threads of Ancestors," by Leila Mize for this line. Also, O'Neal 's "Annals of Newberry County, South Carolina," pp 55 and 56, which lis ts two groups of Virginia settlers who migrated to the 96th District in S C. The name "Ritchie" occurs in both those groups. WILL: The will of Adam Ritchey, dated July 18, 1804, was proved on Fe b. 9, 1805, in Cumberland County, PA. There, he identified himself as bei ng of Middleton Township. The will and some accompanying material have a n umber of intereseting features. In one section, he referred to his daughte r, Elizabeth, wife of David Leester. In another section, he referred to Wi lliam Leester, believed to be the son of David. LAND: According to a letter from Iantha G. Baker to John C. Fralish, Jr ., of the Cumberland County Historical Society in Carlisle, PA, Adam Ritch ey owned two parcels of land located somewhere between Mt. Holly Springs a nd Boiling Springs. One tract was 107 acres. DEED: In a letter dated January 13, 1979, to John Fralish from Iantha Bake r: "According to a deed of June 23, 1800, after Adam Ritchey's son, Thoma s, died, he deeded the 107-acre, 116-perches parcel to his daughter-in-la w, widow of Thomas, in trust for their only child and heir, about age 1, l ater referred to "Thomas the Younger," after whose death it later revert ed back to Adam's own sons and daughters. This deed indicated that the par cel was "now laid off by Samuel Lyon, Esq., Deputy Surveyor." Previousl y, Adam had placed his son, William Ritchey, on the land. William lived th ere and improved it for some time, then sold his right to his brother, Tho mas (probably because William's first wife died, and he went to Westmorela nd County about 1792). The deed also mentioned that this parcel was land " whereon the said Adam now lives." Adjacent neighbors were listed as: (on t he North) Gilson and Thomas Craighead; (on the west) Michael Ege's land; ( on the south) Henry Woolf; and (on the east) Adam Ritchey's daughter, Nanc y." ESTATE: Supplement #65 in the Estate of Adam Ritchey, examined and pass ed January 14, 1815, and presented by the Administrator, Edward O'Hail, li sts in item 19, "By cash to William Leester, Principal and Interest of h is specific Legacy pr will and rect. - $62.93." MARRIAGE: Also given as 1747.
