Adam Porter arrived in Indiana in the winter of 1815 with his father Robert Porter and family, though the Porter family history says otherwise. Robert Porter settled in Fayette County near his brother Joshua and is found in 1820 Census there. In 1822 Robert Porter bought land in Rush County near Glenwood near the Fayette County line. He later bought more land in 1829 with his brother John. Adam and his young wife (Catherine Holman) lived for a time in a one room log house without a floor.
Robert Porter died in Rush County June 17, 1845 (will probated there) and was buried in the Alger Cemetery.
During the Civil War, Adam shipped two car loads of hogs to Cincinnati. The entire shipment was captured by the Confederate Soldiers.
