Explanatory note suggests that Chouppes, diocese of Poitiers, France could be the place of origin of the Acadian DUGAS family. Abraham DUGAS, born in 1616, a native of Toulouse and armorer [gunsmith] of the King (Reference in footnote: card of Father Archange GODBOUT at the Archives of Quebec; also Memoires de la Societe Genealogique Canadienne-Francoise, vol. 6, pp. 371-388). Abraham DUGAS' ancestors were originally from Lyonnais, the original name was COIGNET or du COIGNET. In the 17th century a member of this family distinguished himself through military service, and was made a knight of St-Louis, received land named "le domain du Gas." They have 12 arpents of land, with 20 head of cattle and one gun. !CENSUS: 1686, Port Royal, Acadia, age 70. No land or animals listed, but entered between Jean COMMEAUX [COMEAU] and Martin BENOIST. Living with wife Marguerite DOUCET, age 50 [so born around 1636. Was she a sister of his first wife?] Bergeron, p. 177, says he m. ca 1647 Louise-Judith DOUCET (d/o Germain). !MARRIAGE-CHILDREN: He was a witness to his daughter Anne's second marriage on 26 APR 1679 in Beaubassin, Acadia. White's historical notes: Selon un mémoirre attribué à Lamothe-Cadillac, Abraham Dugas"faisait les fonctions de lieutenant général [civil et criminel]" ( E.Rameau de Saint-Père, Une Colonie féodale en Amérique, 1889 , vol II,p 300). 5 oct 1687: Abraham Dugas fait sa marque à l'attestation enfaveur de l'oevre du gouverneur d'Aulnay; il est donc arrivé en Acadieavant 1650, l'année de la mort de d'Aulnay (ANF, Col, C11D, vo l II,fol 85). 2 déc 1705: Expropriation de deux emplacements, "joignant et entirant vers l'ancien fort" et appartenant à Abraham Dugas, pourl'extension du fort de Port-Royal (ibid., vol V, fol 158). This deposition does not name Abraham?s wife. She is identified as Marguerite Doucet by four Acadian censuses between 1671 and 1700 and by her burial record in the register of Port-Royal (see DGFA-1, p. 526). Abraham Dugast was "armurier du Roy natif de Toulouse." He arrived in Acadia circa 1640 where he served as lieutenant-general. References
