Pension application of Abner Shropshire (Shropshere) W8724 Susannah f51VA Transcribed by Will Graves 2/13/12
State of Kentucky Bourbon County: SS On this the 7th day of January 1832 personally appeared before the worshipful Justices of the County aforesaid in open Court Abner Shropshire a resident of the said County & State aged Seventy-two years the 13th May next and doth make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named Officers and served as herein stated. In the month of January or February 1779, he volunteered & served in the Virginia militia for the Term of one month. He lived at the time in Orange County Virginia; during this service he was marched to meet the Prisoners taken under Burgoyne, met them at Fauquier Church & returned with them thence to Albemarle Barracks, where said prisoners were stationed. His Captain was James Hawkins, his Major was named Barbour [probably Thomas Barbour]. Immediately succeeding the term of service, he was drafted & served a tour of three months under the same officers; during the whole of this tour he was stationed at the Albemarle Barracks as a guard over the prisoners of Burgoyne, Captain Frank Taylor [Lieutenant Colonel Francis Taylor] was commanding at the Barracks at this time – He then shortly afterwards, as a substitute served another term of three months, at the same barracks as a guard over the same prisoners; at this time Captain Thomas Porter was commanding at the barracks. He afterwards served two tours of three months each, in the Virginia militia, this was in the year 1781. During this service, his Captain was George Waugh; that his Colonel was Thomas Mathews, Major Barbour of Orange County Virginia was also in command. In the Spring of 1781 the troops to which he belonged met at Orange Court House & was marched to Richmond; when he arrived at Richmond, the British were burning Manchester [April 30, 1781]. From Richmond he was marched to Williamsburg & returned thence to Richmond; the latter place was then deserted by the inhabitants; from Richmond he was marched to Maubin Hill [Malvern Hills] Camp; then to the Raccoon Ford of the Rappahannock [River] in Orange County. Here the forces to which he belonged met the Army of General Anthony Wayne, & that he (this declarant) assisted to clear the road for that Fort to Pamunkey River. He states that he served in all thirteen months, and that it is (perhaps from his loss of memory) utterly impossible for him to mention the periods of the war when he served or the length of his service, with more precision than he has done as above. He states that he does not recollect whether or not he received at the expiration of his several terms of service regular written discharges, but if he did he has lost them; That he has no documentary evidence whatever, but by the deposition of Nathaniel Mothershead accompanying this declaration, proves his services. He was born in Orange County Virginia on the 13th of May 1761 of which he has a register, at which place he resided until the year 1789 when he removed to Kentucky & has been residing in Bourbon County aforesaid of that State, his present State of Residence ever since. He is known to many respectable persons of his own neighborhood & elsewhere who can testify as to his honor & veracity and many others he would mention in his own neighborhood the Reverend Lewis Corbin a Baptist Preacher, Robert Scroggin Esquire & Joseph Chinn who can also state as to the common reputation of his having been a soldier of the Revolution, & out of his neighborhood, he would mention the Honorable Richard M. Johnston now a member of Congress to whom he has been known for many years. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension Roll or agency of any State. Sworn to & subscribed the day & year aforesaid. S/ Abner Shropshere [Lewis Corbin, a clergyman, and Robert Scroggin gave the standard supporting affidavit.]
