Be it known that before me Robert J. Robertson, a Justice of the peace in and for said County and State, personally appeared Thomas Flora aged about seventy four years and Robert Flora aged about sixty four years resident of said County, who being duly cautioned and Sworn, in due form of law, state on oath, that they are children of Abijah Flora, deceased late of said County, who was a Revolutionary soldier of the United States, whose claim for a pension was, and is, suspended at the Pension office at Washington City; that the said deceased entered said service in the state of Virginia; that he died in the county of Ross in the year 1840, they believe on the 10th day of May that their mother named Margaret Flora died in Ross county Ohio about the 22nd day of March AD 1838. That their father and mother were maried about the year 1775 that they resided in Ross County Ohio from about the year 1799 until the time of their respective deaths [Power of attorney to obtain pension and land for their father’s service follows.]

[On 19 July 1853 John Flora, 62, another one of three sons who survived Abijah Flora, assigned the same attorney for the same purpose.]

    NOTE:
I could find no record of Captains Stocton (or Stockton) or Lee, or of Col. Mitchel (or Mitchell) in the Continental line of Virginia.

A note in the file reads as follows: “Abijah Flora claims for six mo service as a boatman in transporting the public stores. This is not deemed a military service within the contemplation of the act.”

In fact, however, the Pension Office’s own regulations for the 1832 act excluded only “those who were occasionally employed with the army upon civil contracts, such as Clerks to Commissaries and to Store Keepers, &c., Teamsters, Boatmen, &c.”
