The settlement of the estate of Samuel Townsend, dated 15 Jan 1724/25 [Middlesex probate 22702] lists his children surviving "one by his First wife, & four by his last wife", calls John (by his second wife) his eldest son, Abigail is listed first among daughters, so presumably the oldest daughter, "advanced by her s'd father at her Marriage (5lb) five pounds" [though married name not specified], and her marriage in 1718 supporting a birth prior to her father's second marriage. It is presumed therefore, that her mother, the first wife, probably died as a complication of her birth.
