Obituary

MRS. FOLKERT VANZANTEN DEAD

Mrs. Folkert VanZanten died this morning at 8 o'clock at her home on Elliot street. Mrs. VanZanten had been ill for about a week with smallpox which without doubt she contracted while in Detroit at the time of her son's death a few weeks ago.
Mrs. VanZanten was call to Detroit but a few weeks ago by the news of her son Charles' serious illness with the smallpox, from which he afterwards died. Her son's wife and child became ill with the disease and Mrs. VanZanten returned home heartbroken and weak from the terrible ordeal.
She was somewhat ill during the first week of her return, but as she had been vaccinated, it was not considered that she was stricken the the dread disease. Her illness was attributed to her weakened and serious condition. Saturday, February 14th, however, she showed unmistakable symptoms of the smallpox and the family was quarantined. Her case was considered quite severe, but her death is attributed by the family more to her weakened condition than to the smallpox.
Mrs. VanZanten was born in the Netherlands and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Baar. Mrs. VanZanten was 51 years old and is survived by her husband and seven children: Simon of Kenosha, Cornelius, Jacob, Lena, Kate, Alice and Jennie, all of this city. Deceased was a sister of Jacob Baar and Henry Baar of this city and Mrs. Simon Gleum of Kenosha.
The family is prostrated with grief and the sympathy of the city is with them, for the sad calamity that has befallen them.
