... We now turn to the afternoon school. Here only the English language is used. As early as 1870, when Mr. A. J. D. Wedemeyer was supeintendent, an afternoon Sunday-school was organized and flourished for about four years. It proved a great benefit to many teachers and scholars. When, in 1874, Mr. Wedemeyer was succeeded by Rev. Wraage, the afternoon school was suspended. It appears that Mr. Wedemeyer's successor was not friendly disposed towards the use of the English language in a Sunday-school belonging to a German congregation. This had a bad effect upon the Sunday-school. A number of scholars were lost altogether, while others would attend English Sunday-schools of other denominations. The evil effects of this were felt for many years both in Sunday-school and church. ...
... [1878/79] ... The afternoon Sunday-school had been organized by Mr. A. J. D. Wedemeyer years before and was a very promising branch of our school. It was suffered, however, to die again because it was somewhat difficult for some people to see what benefit an English Sunday-school could be to a German congregation. ...
... The renovated church received a number of handsome memorials. ... Mr. A. J. D. Wedemeyer, a window in memory of his mother ...
