Background
The following Patten's (and variations were listed in the 1800 Ohio Territorial Census. All were present in Washington County, confined to several communities along the Ohio River.
The census was unique in that it included first an identification of the Head of Household, and then a list of the men over 21 in that household, including the HOH. It may be that the second list was collected for local purposes such as a tax list, or perhaps to identify men who could bear arms on the frontier.
Some households were surveyed twice, apparently on different days, and their are a number of duplicate entries, with slight differences in the household composition. Some HOH were left blank. Those entries may be where the HOH was a woman, but there are also some households where a woman is listed as HOH, but not included in the liftoff men over 21.
Data
1800 Territorial Census Territory Northwest of the River Ohio
| Person | Town | County | Slaves | Free persons | Other Males 21+ | Comment
| Isaac Patten | Newtown | Washington | | | Household of Benjamin Green, with Richard Pitar, Samuel Elliot, John Patten, | Ancestry trees consistently identify him as the son of William Patten=Jane Southard. Line traces to William Patten 1660-1715, who died in Somerset MD,with nuermous sons; Data on this lineage is fairly consistent, but there seems to have been a lot of local movement from MD to DE, to NJ, some which can be confirmed independently, some of which has not yet been confirmed.
| Isaac Patten | Newtown | Washington | | | Household of Benjamin Green, with Richard Pitar, William Poland, Samuel Elliot, John Patten.* | Duplicate entry, with some differences in composition of the household. Apparently the sheriff visited the household on two separate dates, and a slightly different set of persons were living there on those dates.
|
James Patten | Belpre | Washington | | | Household of Edward Henderson, with Seth Fuller, | James Patten (1755-1827) is an historical figure of importance in the early settlement period. He is known to have been born in Bedford, and is thus unlikely to have kinship ties with the Pattens who settled in Marietta/Warren Township. died there in January 1827.
|
John Patten | Newtown | Washington | | | Household of Benjamin Green, with Richard Pitar, Samuel Elliot, Isaac Patten | John Patten appears in the same household as Isaac Patten, and so we might guess that he's a kinsman of Isaac. Currently, the only obvious kin would be John Patton 1752-1839; That John Patton, however, seems to be well documented through census records as living in Fayette Co PA in the 1790-1830 census records, including an 1800 census record. He seems to have settled down in Fayette well before the 1800 census, and it seems unlikely that he could be the John Patten appearing in Washington Co OH in 1800 census.
| Richard Patten | Marietta | Washington | | 2 | Timothy | By-Name: Richard Patten the Elder, father of Richard patten the Patriarch, husband of Lucy Colville. Richard the Elder died in Marietta Township in 1801.

|
James Pattin | Marietta | Washington | | 2 | Houshold of Edward Howard | Lived some distance from the Other Pattens in Marietta Township. Believed to be the son of Richard Patten the Elder
|
Thomas Pattin | Marietta | Washington | | 1 | none | By Names Thomas Patten the Elder, brother of RIchard Patten the Elder, probably died in Marietta Township c1801
