1863-05-30 | James Donovan, Patrick Delury, John Walden, and Michael Connor | West London Observer | 3 | 4-5 | Disturbance at Parson's Green | "- Four men, named James Donovan, Patrick Delury, John Walden, and Michael Connor, were charged as follows:-
Police-Constable Shannon said that about six o'clock on the previous evening he was on duty at Parson's Green where he found Connor with a great number of people. Two men were fighting, and the prisoner, who was drunk, was in the ring and acted as a backer. Witness advised them to disperse, but Connor was one of the first to refuse. He took him into custody, when he resisted. A great crowd assembled around them, and the other prisoners attempted to rescue Connor from custody. Witness and another Constable were assailed with a shower of stones, and he was obliged to draw his staff.
The prisoners set up a defence that there was no fighting, but they were playing, and the Police used violence to them.
Sergeant Troughton said they could never take a man into custody at Parson's Green without the police being pelted with stones.
Mr. Ingham fined Donovan, who threw a stone, 10s., and the others 5s. each."
