Brevard " Samuel patented Sligo plantation in 1723. He also owned Alexandria and Bullens Range. The Samuel Alexander of Enderly Farms near Charlotte, N.C. is probably The son or gr. son of Samuel b. 1699. COL. Samuel Alexander, age 78,was taken prisoner at Camden, S.C. (formerly part of N.C. at this Point), when ordered by British Brown to join his forces and he with others refused to do so. He was fastened to cart and forced to march 42 miles to be interned. Later he was sent to Georgia for release but enforced residence during The Revolution. His son, CAPT. Samuel Alexander, was attacking The British at Fort Cornwallis and his father was placed in front of The British line. He was uninjured. Son and father show lands in Georgia, but The soldiery returned to their own states after Revolution. Georgia Habersham Records of D.A.R. give COL. Samuel Alexander as of royal line, said to be proven. McCrady History of S.C., p. 270. McCall's History of Georgia, Vol. II, pp. 329, 330, 332, 327. COL. Samuel Alexander of Camden is of correct age to have son of Samuel and Mary, of Cecil Co., MD. will3/9/1730.

Samuel Alexander married Mary Alexander. The births of his children are recorded in Somerset Register, D.B.I. K.L. The Judicial records of Somerset Co., MD contain references to Samuel in The County quite early. He was a large land owner in Cecil Co. In 1714, 200 acres of land in Cecil Co., known as Sligo, was patented to him. He also had tracts known as "Alexandria" and "Hispaniola". See Alexander Kin for more details. He was born in 1657 at Raphoe, Ireland. He died in 1733 at Cecil Co, MD.

The CharMeck story "6. Samuel Alexander, after settling on The Pocomoke about 1685, removed in 1723 to Cecil County. That year he, John Brevard, and Peter Bouchelle were elders of The Broad Creek Presbyterian Congregation.14 On 13 June 1723 Richard Thompson deeded to Samuel Alexander "one acre of land for The use of The Presbyterian Congregation to erect [thereon] a meeting house" for which an annual rent of one eat of Indian corn was to be paid, if lawfully demanded.15 Himself patentee of SLIGO, he deeded 21 March 1723 to his son Martin The northern end thereof, adjoining ALEXANDRIA and BULLEN'S RANGE. Witnesses were his sons Francis and Samuel Alexander, Jr.16 The following year he gave a part of SLIGO and of ALEXANDRIA to his son Francis.17 Witnesses were his son Samuel, Jr., and John, son of his brother James. Samuel Alexander, Sr., died testate leaving a wife Mary, whose surnome before her marriage is not of record, and The following children, certain of whom were mentioned in his will dated 29 March 1727 which was probated 14 June 18,1733:

i. James, b 1 January 1685 at Pocomoke;

ii. Martin, b 18 March 1687 at Annamessix; witness to The will of his father; died in Cecil County between March 1750 and 1 August 1751; married Susannah Foster;

H e was born about 1576 and educated at The Stirling GrammarSchool, Glasgow University and on The continent at Leyden. Heaccompanied The 7th Earl of Argyll in a tour of Europe where heacquired some Fren ch and Italian. In his early days William Alexanderwas an intimate of Alexander Hume and later formed a close friendshipwith Drummond of Hawthornden. He had literary aspirations andpublished A Short D iscourse on The Gowrie Conspiracy in 1600. This wasfollowed by four tragedies: Croesus, Darius, The Alexandrean andJulius Caesar, 1603-07, bound up as The Monarchicke Tragedies in 1604and 1607. His po ems, A Paraenesis to The Prince and Aurora appeared in1604, and of his later works The best-known is The lengthy Doomesday(1614). In 1627 he was granted The privilege, for 21 years, ofimprinting The P salms of King David, translated into metre by his lateMajesty James I, though mostly by William himself. A revised versionof muchof his work was issued as Recreations with The Muses in 1637.From The E arl of Argyll, William Alexander had a charter of The landsand barony of Menstrie in 1605, having nine years earlier been infeftby him of The 'five pund' land of The Mains of Menstrie.
