NDB. A Mother in Israel Fallen. (unknown date). |
Mrs. Anna Stevens died at Rome, January 12th. She received a stroke of paralysis on Wednesday, the 6th inst., and the following week passed away from earth to "be with Jesus." She was born in Springfield, Mass., in 1782, moving to Western New York in 1820, and emigrated to Michigan in 1837, settling in the township of Rome, where she resided until her death. Her husband, Levi Stevens, died November 24th, 1849, since which time the widow's God has been her consolation. She had lived 38 years in Michgan, and was converted to Christ when but seven years of age, and was subsequently baptised and united with the Baptist church, since which time she has been a consistent Christian, and a firm and unwavering advocate of the principles peculiar to the denomination of her choice. Her life was characterized by a broad charity, and an unwearied benevolence. Like the Saviour she loved , she "went about doing good." That her extreme old age seemed to hinder her usefulness, was to her a heavy cross. Her life was eminently a good one and her example and influence a sufficient eulogy. She raised a family of eight children, and was a loving mother, a judicious counselor, and faithfull in all relations of life. She was fully conscious up to the very last moment of her earthly life, and her last hours were as peaceful as the setting sun in a cloudless sky. As a shock of corn fully ripe, she was ready to be gathered into the heavenly garner. A large concourse of kindred and acquaintances took their last farewell of her mortal remains on Thursday, the 14th inst., the funeral services being conducted by the writer.
