MRS. WILSON OF FRANKLIN

Convicted of Assault on Her Aged Mother-in-Law.

The trial of Mrs. Louise Wilson, of Franklin, on charge of assault and battery on her 90-years-old mother-in-law, attracted a large crowd to Justice Vandegrift’s court room Monday afternoon.

The defendant was not placed on the stand, but the domestic and a niece testified in her behalf. The old lady was the only witness for the prosecution, and she told the same story that she gave at first.

She was attempting to build a fire in the kitchen stove, when the daughter-in-law struck her four times on the head, and then called in the husband who horsewhipped her.

The trial came to an end about 9(?) o’clock but Justice Vandegrift reserved he decision until 1 o’clock this afternoon.

At this time he found the defendant guilty, and sentenced her to pay a fine and costs of $34.55, or go to the Detroit house of correction for 65 days. She paid the fine.

From The MICHIGAN MESSENGER, Wednesday, November 28, 1894, Page 3, Column 3:

Mrs. Wilson, the Franklin woman charged with beating and horse-whipping her 90 years old mother-in-law, now an inmate of the county house, had her trial in Justice Vandegrift’s court yesterday afternoon, continuing over into this morning. At 1 o’clock this afternoon the justice imposed a fine of $10 and costs, amounting to about $24, and in default of payment she is to spend 60 day in the Detroit house of correction.

An appeal will be taken by defendant’s attorneys, Watts, Bean & Smith. The woman’s husband is already serving a 60 day sentence in Detroit for the same crime. Considerable interest was taken in the trial and the court room has been crowded.

From The WEEKLY PRESS, Adrian, Mich., Friday, November 23, 1894, Page 3, Column 3:

The trial of Louise Wilson, of Franklin for assault and battery on her mother-in-law, aged 90 years, came off before Justice Vandegrift Monday afternoon, but the Justice reserved his decision until Tuesday. In writing up this affair our two daily cotemporaries (sic) disagree as to the facts, but the Times has the correct version of it. We clip the following for comparison:

The Justice imposed a fine of $10 and costs, amounting to about $24, and in default of payment she is to spend 60 days in the Detroit house of correction. Attorneys, Watts, Bean & Smith. --- Telegram.

Justice Vandegrift found the defendant guilty, and sentenced her to pay a fine and costs of $34.55 or go to the Detroit house of correction for 65 days. She paid the fine. --- Times.
