The hand of the reaper takes the ears that are hoary,
But the voice of the weeper wails manhood in glory.
Died in Crawford county, Arkansas on the 15th ult. Edward W. B. Nowland, Esq.
Capt. Nowland was born in Harford county, Maryland in 1806 - emigrated at about the age of 14 to Middle Tennessee - in 32 was appointed sutler at Fort Gibson, on our borders, from which post he removed during the past year to Crawford.
He was no ordinary man - no every day character. With rich mental gifts, he was frank, generous, and warm hearted - eminently social and of exquisite sensability, he commanded the admiration and regard of his associates, and he was the delight of his friends. The kindest recollections and the fondest of the community will cluster around the memory of such an individual, who in his 36th year sunk into a premature grave.
I spoke of society and friends. I dare not attempt a description of the bereavement and desolation of the family circle. Capt. N. left a most admialbe and devotedly attached wife, and four little children too young to know the noble bearing of their father, except as they may catch it from the fond lispings of a mother, or the society with which they may hereafter mingle.
