Of consumption in Adolphustown, Waty, consort of Mr. Lazarus Gilbert
in the 46th year of her age. Her parents Mr. William Casy and Martha
his wife, were among the first settlers of this province. Whilst their
hands were occupied in the affairs of a new settlement their hearts
were arrested by the Gospel through the instrumentalty of minister
known by the name Methodists. Having obtained Heart felt religion,
these pious parents were not forgetful of the spiritual wants of there
children. Their daughter Waty in her 13th year became sensible of her
naturely lost sister and joined the Methodist Church. Two years after,
while attending a camp meeting, ( the first held in Canada ), she
obtained parden and grace from that happy day until her death retained
her standing in church and the union of her God. Various but heavy
were her trials through life. At the death of her former husband, Mr
J. West of whose ( happiness in his last moments the readers of the
Christian Guardian some time ago heard,) She was of slender
circumstances with a family of small children but help was giver her
from both heaven and earth. Her friends afforded assistance by
bringing up the little ones and the widows god kindly gave the daily
bread. Her union with Mr. Gilbert was a happy one. Then she could say
she times have fallen upon me in pleasant places, I have a goodly
heritage. In 1834 her health began to fail, the following autumn her
hectic fever alarmed her friends, and her cough soon prostrated her
remaining strength. Her poise friends often prayed with her and at
these occasions she frequently manifested much. When she became
sensible her approaching solution with great strength of mind her
reactions respecting the course of life that her children should
pursue. She spoke of death with composure as one who had treasure
beyond the grave. Her last words were GLORY to GOD. Her reference the
words of the wise man are applicable "The woman that fear the Lord,
She shall be praised." At her funeral an appropriate and very
impressive discourse was addressed to a deeply affected assembly.
