Eliza Jane Stephens was living with her parents on the 1880 census of Jackson Co. Missouri, taken during the summer months, and Manuel was in Johnson Co. Ks. with his parents, a distance of just a few months.
Manuel applied for their marriage license at Olathe, Kansas, the county seat. They were married at Lacyne, Kansas, Linn Co., which is about 40 miles south of Stanley and Olathe. Quite a distance in those days but it was on the Old Military Road to Ft. Scott, Kansas, garrison for the biggest U.S. Army in the region. Now 69 Highway.
We don't know if the Stephens family moved to Lacyne after the census of 1880 was taken, or if some of Eliza Jane's relatives lived there. The Historical Society of Linn Co. finds a number of Stephens & Filtingberger families living there but we cannot connect them to our families before 1900. The missing 1890 census of Missouri & Kansas has caused a problem in finding several of our ancestors at the time they may have died and were buried. Church records in Jackson County Missouri have been of some help.
