This ancestor William Stephens has been difficult to search. We have looked for him on the 1850 census in counties between Cooper & Morgan on the East and Jackson Co. on the West and all surrounding counties. Until we know the name of his parents, our search cannot progress back to New York and earlier.
This missing 1890 census in Missouri has prevented us from knowing where and when William & Major Stephens died. Most of their children migrated across the State line into Johnson County Kansas where we find them on census and land records. We have searched each and every one thru the years up to 1915 Kansas State census hoping to find our Great Grandparents living with a child. Missouri & Kansas didn't require filing death records until 1910 & 1911. Cemetery records that have been kept do not show William & Major Stephens.
It appears that our ancestor NEVER owned property, maybe never belonged to a church or went to school. He left many descendants living in the Kansas City area and adjoining Johnson Co. Kansas, and in the 20th Century scattered around the country. No doubt, there are many descendants that we have no record of. The following is what we do know.
The oldest child, Brunette Stephens, b. ca 1846 Cooper Co. Mo.
Brunette is listed on census 1860 with her parents in Jackson County Missouri, Blue Township, and again 1870 Morgan County, Missouri, Richland Township. Nothing more is known about this daughter.
On the 1870 census is a grandson living with the family. Willie age 5 b Mo. Brunette was the only child old enough to be the parent of a child in 1865. Brunette is not with the family in 1880 but Willie age 14 is. We are working on finding a record that may show that Brunette was the mother of Willie.
Peyton Stevens • m ca 1876 • Eliza Ann ?
b ca 1851 Cooper Co. Mo. • • b ca 1858 Missouri
d after 1900 • • d after 1900
last found on census in Jackson Co. Mo. Kaw Township living with son, James, at 110 Grand Ave. • •
Peyton (Pate) Stevens used this spelling on most of the records that we have found. His father always spelled the name Stephens. We have found families grow accustomed to their own spellings, whatever is easiest.
In 1880 Pate and his young family are living near his parents and younger brothers and sisters in Jackson Co. Mo. Blue Township. We next find him in Johnson Co. Kansas Olathe Township. He is living near another Pate/P.W. Stephens age 62 born N.Y. We believe this is a brother of William b. 1825.
