William Stephens was a young man of about 20 years when he married Major Dillard in Cooper Co. Mo. He lived in Clear Creek Township. We did not find the family on the 1850 census and have not found his parents. The 1840 census does not list a Clear Creek Twp. and the given names of children.

Major Dillard was born in Cooper Co. Mo. Her parents were William Dillard and Jane Williams, who came to Missouri with their parents from Kentucky before 1830. In "Early Cooper County Pioneers" by Carter there is much compiled information on the Dillards and their descendants, which will follow our Stephens family.

On the 1860 census we find out Stephens family in Jackson County, Missouri, Blue Township, Independence, page 76, line 589.

Stephens, W.H. • age 35 (1825) • born Ky? • day laborer personal est. $75 Stephens, Major • age 35 (1825) • born Mo • Stephens, Brunette • age 14 (1856) • born Mo • Stephens, Payton R. • age 10 (1850) • born Mo • Stephens, Juli Ann • age 7 (1853) • born Mo • Stephens, Henry C. • age 4 (1856) • born Mo • Stephens, James • age 2 (1858) • born Mo •

A daughter, Eliza Jane, and a son, John A., were born before 1870.

During the 1860s - Civil War years - was a turbulent time in Jackson Co. Mo. After much loss of life and property caused by the raiding bands of guerrillas like Captain Quantrell, the Jayhawkers and Bush Wackers, many residents along the State Line between Missouri and Kansas had to abandon their farms and homes, going to other areas for safety.

We believe this is the reason we next find that our Stephens ancestor and his family are in Clay County, Mo., just to the north of Kansas City, where the youngest child was born in 1864. For whatever reason, we may never know, on the next census our family is in Morgan County, Missouri, Richland Twp., page ? line 24.
