John B. Laughlin was a young boy when the Civil War started and we think his father volunteered for service - probably for the South as he is not on Tax Lists 1863 thru 1866. Being the oldest boy John had to be in charge of their farm and 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
About 1877 at age 22 John migrated to Jackson County Missouri with other members of the family. He was married in March of 1879 to Annie Morton daughter of Warren C. Morton and Rachael Gray. John & Annie are found on the 1880 census in Washington Township near New Santa Fe. The first overnite stop on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trail, migration route to the west. The parents of both John and Annie as well as most of their brothers and sisters were all living nearby.
About 1890 the family moved to Johnson County Kansas, just a few miles across the state line. John was a farmer with about 150 acres. As most families in those times, they were self sustaining, the children going to school and growing to adulthood, marrying and starting their own families.
John died in 1919 during the Influenza Epidemic with Pulmonary complications. Annie was left with two sons unmarried, one in the Navy of WW I. She sold the farm and moved into the town of Stanley, supporting herself as long as her health permitted. She died in 1951 at age 90 of Arteriosclerosis & complications of old age.
