At 15 he started to roam around the country in summer months. At 21 in New York City he married and after his first child died soon after birth, Don and Vera returned to Kansas where twin sons did not survive. Don returned to N.Y. where he could find work, married a second time, starting a new family. During World War II he worked for the Coast Guard, 1950 found him out of work so he traveled to Washington State and went to work for the U.S. Naval Ship Yards. He was killed before his family could join him at Bremerton, Wash.
